Since the greater number is x
therefore smaller number = x-1

according to question x(x-1)=342
therefore x^2-x=342

x^2-x-342=0
therefore option D is correct

Given

  • product of two consecutive integers is 342

To find

  • quadratic equation can be used to find x

Solution

we are provided that the product of two consecutive numbers will be 342. let us assume that the first number be (x - 1) , therefore the second number that is consecutive to the previous one will be x.

therefore we can mathematically write the expression as,

(x-1)x = 342

or, x^2 - x = 342 ( opening the bracket of LHS)

or, x^2 - x -342 = 0 (bringing 342 to the left )

equation would be x^2 - x -342 = 0 and thus, the option d is correct.
