Question:

The product of two numbers is 36 . if the sum is 15 then find the number.

Solution:

Let,

two numbers be x and y

then,

x y = 36

x = 36 / y ......eqn(1)

and

x + y = 15

(using eqn (1))

(36/y) + y = 15

(taking LCM)

(36 + y² ) / y = 15

(cross multiplying)

36 + y² = 15 y

y² - 15 y + 36 = 0

(splitting the middle term)

y² - 12 y - 3 y + 36 = 0

y ( y - 12) - 3 ( y - 12) = 0

(y-3) ( y-12) = 0

y = 3

or

y = 12

so,

putting y = 3 in eqn ( 1)

we will get

x = 12

and putting y = 12

x = 3

Therefore, the numbers will be

3 and 12 .
