Given : the product of two numbers is divisible by 2

but their sum is not.

To Find : Which of these could not be the difference between the numbers

6,9,12,18

Solution:

the product of two numbers is divisible by 2

Let say a and b

a * b is divisible by 2

three possible case

=> a = 2m     b = 2n

a = 2m   b = 2n + 1

a = 2m + 1   , b  = 2n

Sum = 2m + 2n  = 2(m + n)  is divisible by 2

Hence not possible

2m + 2n +  1= 2(m + n ) + 1  is not divisible by 2

2n + 2m + 1 =  2(m + n ) + 1  is not divisible by 2

Hence a = 2m   b = 2n + 1      or a = 2m + 1   , b  = 2n

Difference

= 2n + 1 - 2m                        or 2 (m - n) + 1

= 2(n -  m) + 1

Hence odd number

9 is the only  odd number

Hence  9 can be difference between number

Example

1  * 10  = 10  divisible by 2

1 + 10  = 11 not divisible by 2

2 * 11 = 22 Divisible by 2

2 + 11 = 13  not divisible by 2

Hence 9 is the correct answer in given options
