The reaction between chlorine and cold dilute aqueous sodium hydroxide solution is:

2NaOH + Cl2 --> NaCl + NaOCl + H2O

NaCl - Sodium Chloride

NaOCl - Sodium Chlorate(I)

H2O - Water

In the end products, chlorine's oxidation state has been both reduced (in NaCl) and oxidized (in NaOCl).

Hence, such a reaction in which a single element undergoes both oxidation and reduction is called a disproportionate reaction.
