The one gene- one enzyme hypothesis was put forward by George Wells Beadle and Edward L Tatum in the year 1941 in the United States.

Through this hypothesis, the two showed how certain genes control the synthesis of polypeptides - enzymes which control the metabolism process.

The two scientists first worked on a kind of fruit fly called Drosophilia, to test for mutations in eye colour.

They then experimented with neurospora, which led to the present results.
