The properties of a compound are different from the properties of an element because the elements are formed by bonding of same atom whereas compounds are formed by the bonding of different atoms.

For eg, WATER-H2O

It is formed by the bonding of two atoms, one is hydrogen and other is oxygen. Whereas hydrogen and oxygen are two different elements formed by bonding of their constituents.
