“The properties of compounds are different from the properties of
elements." Justify the statement with the help of an example.

Answer:

Sodium and Chlorine combine to form common salt.

2 Na + Cl2 ----> 2 NaCl

Sodium is a very reactive metal which immediately catches fire when put in water and Chlorine is a poisonous gas. Yet these two form common salt which we consume everyday, and does not have properties similar to its constituent elements.  

Hence we can say that the properties of compounds are different from elements.
