Answer:
There is plenty of humor in the play The Proposal. The three main characters are quite quarrelsome. They don’t miss any opportunity to quarrel with one another. Lomov comes to Chubukov’s house with a marriage proposal for his daughter, Natalya. However, in the heated discussion they forget the proposal and start arguing and quarrelling.
Lomov is the most humorous character. His illnesses such as palpitations, spasms, etc. really make him a comic character. There are the following humorous incidents in the play:
1. Lomov and Natalya arguing about Oxen Meadows.
2. Chubukov and Lomov insulting each other's families.
3. Lomov's hysterical fits.
4. Lomov and Natalya arguing about Guess and Squeezer, their dogs.
Explanation:
The subjects for this act include making fun of marriage and matrimony, which is a comedy or a satire. Chekhov discusses the true nature and purpose of marriage in his day, an institution which did not necessarily have romance and affection to include. The idea that marriage is an agreement between two people, pretty business like Chekhov demonstrates by making both persons involved in this proposal bicker and dispute before they consent to be married at the end, where you know they are going to start bickering and argue
Explanation:
The proposal is certainly a funny piece. Lomov's very entry into the formal dress, and the way Chubukov embraces him calling him ‘my treasure’, ' darling. ' ‘my beauty’ makes one laugh.
The proposal of marriage is intended to be romantic and humorous since Natalya and Lomov make the game humorous with debates regarding small questions such as possession of Oxen Meadows and superiority of dogs.
The main words I use for each other, such as a scarecrow, snow ghost, blind hen, stuffed sausage, etc., cause you to laugh. Natalya's hysterical fit when she learns about the proposal and the father's and daughter's grief when they assume that Lomov is dead creates tremendous humour.
Finally, it is really funny how Natalya puts her hand in Loom's under continuous arguments for the approval of the proposal. So we can see that the whole play is full of humor, making it a humourous play
