The construction began in the time of Humayun and continued under Sher Shah Suri. Sher Shah who was the founder of the Suri dynasty defeated Humayun in 1540 and named the fort as Sher Garh; he added several more structures in the fort during his reign. Purana Qila is erected at a height of 18 metres.
