The purposes of this study were to determine the most effective method for teaching a physical skill to grade school children, and whether there was a difference between public and private schools. One public and one private school were randomly selected from the schools in a moderately sized Midwestern town. A random sample of 100 children was then selected from each school, and each of the selected child was randomly assigned to receive either verbal instruction in the task, followed by practice of the task, or watched a videotape of someone performing the task, following by practice of the task. Following completion of the program, all participants were scored on their ability to perform the task (on a poor, average, good, and excellent scale). In addition, six months after completion of the program, you test all participants again on retention of the skill.
