This can be explained through an allusion of the character of "Narcissus" from Greek mythology.
Narcissus is cursed by God to fall in love with his shadow that was being reflected in a well. In this way, he attained his doom, as he was not able to touch or catch his dear love (himself) and was trapped in the illusion for life.
This lifelong punishment relates to the statement made in the sentence- "The python had fallen in love with his own reflection." In here, the python has fallen for his reflection which he witnessed somewhere. And psychologically, what can't be achieved or touched easily, arouses more temptation in the brain. Therefore, the python won't be able to live happily or say, in a natural way after feeling this emotion.
