Given,

\[\begin{array}{l}p = 17\\q = 3.4\end{array}\]

Solution,

a) Find the proportionality constant.

Consider the proportionality constant is k.

\[\begin{array}{l}p \propto q\\ \Rightarrow p = kq\\ \Rightarrow 17 = k \times 3.4\\ \Rightarrow k = \frac{{3.4}}{{17}}\\ \Rightarrow k = 0.2\end{array}\]

Hence the value of proportionality constant is 0.2.

b) Write the equation of variation.

\[p = 0.2q\]

Hence the equation of variation is \[p = 0.2q\].
