Question - A quantity of PCl5 was heated in a 10 litre vessel at 250°C ; PCl5(g) ⇌ PCl3(g) + Cl2(g). At equilibrium the vessel contains 0.1 mole of PCl5 0.20 mole of PCl3 and 0.2 mole of Cl2. Calculate the equilibrium constant of the reaction

Given - Volume of vessel - 10 dm³

Number of moles - 0.2 mole of PCl3 and Cl2 and 0.1 mole of PCl5.

Find - Equilibrium constant for the given reaction.

Solution - The formula to calculate equilibrium constant of the reaction is - Kc = [PCl3] [Cl2]/[PCl5].

The concentration of PCl5 is - 0.1/10 = 0.01 mol/dm³

The concentration of PCl3 is - 0.2/10 = 0.02 mol/dm³

The concentration of Cl2 is - 0.2/10 = 0.02 mol/dm³

Keeping the values in equation-

Kc = 0.02*0.02/0.01

Kc = 0.04

Hence, the equilibrium constant of the reaction is 0.04.
