At first draw draw a figure of it such that OB=r, AB is chord ,AD be half of the chord, OD be distance of the chord from the centre.

then , we will get a right triangle ODB.

here, OB=10cm

DB=1/2AB=6cm

OD =?

By Pythagoras theorem , we have

OB^2=OD^2+DB^2

so, 10^2=OD^2+6^2

=>OD^2= 100 - 36

=>OD=√64

=>OD=8

Hence, the distance of chord from the centre of the circle is 8cm
