The radius of a circle is 13 inches and the length of a chord in the circle is 10 inches. How do you find the distance from the center of the circle to the chord?

r=13inches

so one radius cuts the chord exactly perpendicular bisector and so join one more radius to one end of the chord making it a right angles triangle.

so 13 square =5square+ab square

ab =12inches by Pythagoras theorem.
