Explanation:

I solved this with the help of two formulae which I studied at 12th and got two answers; one inside the earth at a depth d and at a height h from surface of earth. This is because gravity is maximum on surface and decrease both with increase in height and increase in depth.

At depth d inside the Earth,

g(d) = g(1−dR)

where g(d) is the gravity at depth dand R is radius of Earth,

g(d)= g2

Hence,

4.99.8= (1−d6371)

0.5= 1−d6371

d= 3187.5km.

At height h from the surface of Earth,

g(h)= g(1−2hR)

where g(h) is gravity at height h

g(h)= g2

Hence,

4.99.8= 1−2h6371

h=1593.75km.

Hence distance from centre=R+h= 7964.75km.

Hope this helps.
