The simplest reason is that, they couldn't make a common cause against the barbaric invasions, failing to anticipate, prepare, unite and prevent any such aggression.

Another important reason was that they reserved and displayed their valour only in a defensive war and hardly ever tried to launch an offensive and pre-empting attack on enemies.

They had no second line or leadership to defend, in case of defeat.
