The range of a data set is the difference between the largest and smallest values in the set.

Example:

In {4, 6, 9, 3, 7} the lowest value is 3, and the highest is 9.

So the range is 9 − 3 = 6.

The range in data is called the difference between the largest value in the set and the smallest value in the set.

  • Assume that there is a set { a, b, c, d, e, f, f, j}
  • In the above set, let us assume that the smallest value is b, and the largest value is e.
  • Therefore, the range is calculated as,

        ⇒Range = e - b

Numerical example,

  • There is a set of 5 numbers { 5, 7, 2, 6, 1}.
  • First, we will arrange the set in ascending order.
  • After arrangement in ascending order, we get the set as { 1, 2, 5, 6, 7}.
  • Here, in the set, the smallest value is 1, whereas the largest value is 7.
  • Therefore, the Range = The Highest value - The lowest value

        7 - 1 = 6. The range is 6.
