Microorganism have a short life span.

they divide fast and produce millions of individuals with hour.

A colony of bacteria (says A) is growing in a given medium has built in term of ability to utilize the feed component.

A change in the medium would bring out only the part of the population (says B) who can survive under the new conditions.

in due course of time this variant population outgrows the other and appears as new species.

This would happen within Days .

The same thing to happen in a fish or frog would take a millions of years as life span of these animals in years.

Fitness is the end result of the ability to adapt and get selected by nature.
