The present age of a is 26 years.

Correct option: 2) 26 years

Step-by-step explanation:

Given, 4 years ago, the ratio between a and b age was 11 : 14.

Let the common multiple be x

Then, 4 years ago,

  • a was 11x years old
  • b was 14x years old

So, the present age of

  • a is (11x + 4) years
  • b is (14x + 4) years

Then, after 4 years,

  • a will be (11x + 4 + 4) years = (11x + 8) years
  • b will be (14x + 4 + 4) years = (14x + 8) years

According to the question,

11x + 8 : 14x + 8 = 13 : 16

⇒ (11x + 8) × 16 = (14x + 8) × 13

  • since 1st term × 4th term = 2nd term × 3rd term

⇒ 176x + 128 = 182x + 104

⇒ 182x - 176x = 128 - 104

⇒ 12x = 24

x = 2

Thus a's present age is (11 × 2 + 4) years = 26 years.
