x/y = 1000/987

∴ x = 1000y/987 ----- 1

Total population of the city is 2000000

then x + y = 2000000

replacing x from 1

1000y/987 + y = 2000000

y(1000/987 + 1) = 2000000

y((1000 + 987)/987) = 2000000

y(1987/987) = 2000000

y = 2000000 * 987 / 1987

y = 993457
