Given : points A(-15,5) and B(9,20) is

To find : The ratio in which the Y- axis divides the line segment joining the points

Solution:

Any point on y axis  will be

( 0 , y)

(0 , y)  divides   A(-15,5) and B(9,20)

Let say ratio is  k  :  1

=> 0   =  (k * 9  + (-15)(1))/(k + 1)

=> 0 = (9k  - 15 ) /(k + 1)

=> 0 = 9k - 15

=> 9k = 15

=> k = 15/9

=> k = 5 : 3

=> k : 1  =  5 : 3

Lets fins point on y axis also

y    =   ( 5 * 20  + 3 * 5)/(5 + 3)

=> y =  115/8

Point is ( 0 , 115/8)
