The ratio of the smaller number to the larger one is 1:5.

Step-by-step explanation:

Given : The ratio of arithmetic mean of two numbers to one numbers is 3:5.

To find : What is the ratio of the smaller number to the larger one ?

Solution :

Let the two numbers be 'a' and 'b'.

The arithmetic mean of two numbers is given by,

AM=\frac{a+b}{2} , a<\frac{a+b}{2}<b and b>a

The ratio of arithmetic mean of two numbers to one numbers is 3:5.

i.e. \frac{\frac{a+b}{2}}{b}=\frac{3}{5}

Cross multiply,

5(\frac{a+b}{2})=3b

5a+5b=6b

5a=b

\frac{a}{b}=\frac{1}{5}

a:b=1:5

The ratio of the smaller number to the larger one is 1:5.
