The mass of zinc in that alloy is 4 kilograms.

Given data :

Ratio of zinc to copper in that alloy is 5:9

The total mass of the alloy is 11.2 kilograms

• Let,the mass of zinc and copper are ,5x and 9x respectively. (Assume x as a variable to calculate the total mass of zinc in that alloy)

• So,the total mass of the alloy

= Mass of the zinc + Mass of the copper

= 5x + 9x

= 14x Kilograms

• Now, if we compare the calculated total mass and the given total mass then we will get the following equation :

14x = 11.2

x = 11.2/14

x = 0.8

So,the total mass of zinc in that alloy is = 5×0.8 = 4 kilograms (answer)

Mass of Zinc = 4 kg

Explanation:

Given:

  • Ratio of zinc and copper in an alloy is 5 : 9.
  • Weight if alloy is 11.2 kg.

To Find:

  • What is the mass of zinc in alloy ?

Solution: Let x be the common in given ratio. Therefore,

  • Zinc = 5x
  • Copper = 9x

If we add zinc and copper together we will get the alloy

A/q

\implies \: 5x + 9x = 11.2 \\  \\ \implies \: 14x =  \frac{112}{10}  \\  \\ \implies \: 14x \times 10 = 112 \\  \\ \implies \: 140x =  112 \\  \\ \implies \: x =  \frac{112}{140}  \\  \\ \implies \: x = 0.8 \: kg

So, Mass of zinc in alloy = 5x = 5(0.8) = 4 kg

Mass of copper in alloy = 9x = 9(0.8) = 7.2 kg

5x + 9x = 11.2 kg

➽ 4 kg + 7.2 kg = 11.2 kg

➽ 11.2 kg = 11.2 kg { LHS = RHS }
