The ratio of present ages of Adam and Gerry is 5:6. After 7 years this ratio will become 6:7.

let the present age of adam =5x

let the present age of gerry =6x

after 7years

adam age will be 5x +7= 6x

solving the equation 7=6x-5x

7=x

putting the value of x in adams present age

5x=5X7

=35 years

the present ratio of ages is

\frac{x}{y} = \frac{5}{6} \\ \\6x = 5y\\ \\y= \frac{6x}{5}  ---- > (1)

Ratio of ages after 7 years is

\frac{x+7}{y+7}=\frac{6}{7}  \\\\7x+49 = 6y+42\\7x-6y+7=0 ----- > (2)

by substituting equation (1) in (2) we get

7x-6[\frac{6x}{5}]+7 =0\\35x-36x+35=0\\ -x = -35\\x= 35

∴Present age of Adam is x = 35years
