Age of Riti 8 years ago = (2x - 8) years

Age of Nakul 8 years ago = (3x - 8) years

Given

Ratio of their ages 8 years ago = 2 : 5

⇒ (2x - 8)/(3x - 8) = 2/5

By cross multiplication

⇒ 5(2x - 8) = 2(3x - 8)

⇒ 10x - 40 = 6x - 16

⇒ 10x - 6x = - 16 + 40

⇒ 4x = 24

⇒ x = 24/4

⇒ x = 6

Age of Riti = 2x = 2(6) = 12 years

Age of Nakul = 3x = 3(6) = 18 years

∴ their present ages are 12 years and 18 years.
