The present ages of B and A respectively are 10 years and 18 years.

Given: The ratio of the ages of A and B is 9:5 after 8 years B would reach the present age of A.

To Find: the present ages of B and A respectively.

Solution:

Let the constant of proportionality be 'x',

Present age of A = 9x                                     ..... (1)

  Present age of B = 5x                                     ...... (2)

It is said that after 8 years B would reach the present age of A . Frame an equation according to the given condition, we get;

         5x + 8 = 9x

  ⇒   4x = 8

  ⇒    x = 2

Therefore, putting the value of x = 2 in (1) and (2), we get;

  Present age of A = 9 × 2 = 18 years

  Present age of B = 5 × 2 = 10 years

Hence, the present ages of B and A respectively are 10 years and 18 years.
