Given Information:

The ratio of the ages of the father and a son at present is 6:1.After 5 years the ratio becomes 7:2.What is their present ages?

Solution:

  • Let, the present age of son be x yrs
  • Then, the present age of father will be 6x yrs.

After 5yrs,

  • Age of son = (x + 5)yrs
  • Age of father = (6x + 5)yrs

From the question,

6x+5/x+5 = 7/2

⟹ 2(6x+5) = 7(x+5)

⟹ 12x+10 = 7(x+5)

⟹ 12x+10 = 7x+35

⟹ 12x+10-7x = 35

⟹ 5x+10 = 35

⟹ 5x = 35-10

⟹ 25/5

⟹ 5

Therefore,

The present age of son= x = 5yrs

The present age of father= 6x =6×5 = 30yrs.

After five years, the ratio of their ages (father's age and son's age) will become 7: 2. Hence, Present age of son = x = 5 years. Present age of father = 6x = 6(5) = 30 years.
