length \: of \: diagonal \: of \: a \\  \: square \:  =  \sqrt{2}  \\ (by \: the \: pythagores \: theoram)

Ratio \: of \:the \: square \: to  \\ \:that \: of \: square \: drawn \\  \: on \: its \: diagonal \\ = a^{2}/( \sqrt{2a  \ } ) ^{2}  = 1/2
