Given - Resistance in particular arrangement in diagram.

Find - Ratio of effective resistance when key is open and closed respectively.

Solution - When key is open, the resistance in the circuit will be only three. The ones namely 6 ohm, 12 ohm and 6 ohm.

Since they are connected in series, the total resistance will be - 6+12+6 - 24 ohm.

When the key is closed, all the present resistance will be part of circuit. The two 6 ohm resistors are in series, hence the total resistance will be 12 ohm.

Now, the two 12 ohm are in parallel therefore, new resistance will be 12/2 - 6 ohm.

Final total resistance will be - 6 +6+6 - 18 ohm.

The ratio of effective resistance when key is open to close is - 24:18 = 4:3

Hence, the ratio will be 4:3.
