The ratio of the present ages of two brothers is 1:2. 5 years ago, the ratio was 1:3. What will be the ratio of their ages after 5 years?
Let the present age of first brother be 'x'.
Then, present age of second brother = 2x.
5 years ago from now,
First brother's age = x - 5
Second brother's age = 2x - 5
But, according to the question, their ages will become in ratio 1:3
Then,
x-5 : 2x-5 = 1 : 3
=> x-5/2x-5 = 1/3
Cross multiplying, we get,
=> 1(2x-5) = 3(x-5)
=> 2x - 5 = 3x - 15
=> -5 + 15 = 3x - 2x
=> 10 = x
=> x = 10.
So, first brother's present age = x = 10
And, second brother's age = 2x = 2 × 10 = 20
Now, 5 years after from now
First brother's age
= x + 5
= 10 + 5
= 15 years.
And, second brother's age
= 2x + 5
= 2 × 10 + 5
= 20 + 5
= 25 years.
Now, the ratio of their ages
= 15 : 25
= 3 : 5 (dividing by 5)

Thank you. ;-)
