hi Henry,

let their present ages be x and y

The ratio of the present ages of two brothers is 1:2
x/y = 1/2
2x = y

5 years back the ratio was 1:3
x-5 / y-5 = 1/3
3(x-5) = y-5
3x-15 = y-5
3x = y-5+15
3x = y+10

substitute y=2x

3x = 2x + 10
x = 10

so
y = 2x = 2*10
y = 20

Hence their present ages are 10 years and 20 years

Hope it helped
