The ratio of the radii of two circles is 2 : 7. Fill in the blanks to give the ratio in lowest terms.

The ratio of the areas of the smaller circle to that of the larger circle is? Also, I am pretty sure it is not 4:49 as there is also \pi for the area.

No, you are wrong dude.

ratio of their areas of the smaller circle to that of larger circle is 4 : 49.

yes of course there is also π for the area. but value of π is not undefined value. it is defined. and it's other matter that π is an irrational number.

Let's take this question,

area of smaller circle = π(2)² = 4π

area of larger circle =π(7)² = 49π

now, ratio of their areas = 4π/49π, here you are thinking that π can't be cancelled?

then you are wrong, π can be cancelled. in mathematics, we can't cancel when numerator and denominator both contain undefined terms like ∞, we can't say , ∞/∞ = 1 and also we can't say 0/0 = 1

but we can definitely say π/π = 1 , e/e = 1

so, Don't be confuse !

just write answer 4 : 49 .

andreimisalev: Thank you. I understand. So, we cancel 3.14, and it is 4:49. Thank yoy so much!
