The ratio of the refractive
index of ice to that of
quartz is 0.89. If the speed
of light in quartz is 2.05 *
108 m/s, then find the
speed of light in ice.

RI of ice/ RI of quartz = 0.89=89/100=speed of light in ice/ speed of light in vacuum * speed of light in vacuum / speed of light in quartz ( because RI of a substance = speed of light in that substance / speed of light in vacuum)

here, speed of light in vacuum gets cancelled and we are left with:-

speed of light in ice/ speed of light in quartz = 89/100

Now, substituting the value of speed of light in quartz = 2.05*108m/s in the equation, we get:-

speed of light in ice/2.05*108=89/100

speed of light in ice=89/100*2.05*108

speed of light in ice=197.046m/s
