Given:

The ratio of the time period of two sound waves is 1 :4.

To find:

Ratio of frequency ?

Calculation:

First of all, let's define the terms :

  • Frequency is defined as the total number of oscillations completed in one second.

  • Time period is defined as the time taken to complete one full oscillation.

  • This means : TIME PERIOD IS A RECIPROCAL TO FREQUENCY !

From the ratio of time periods , let the time periods be 1x and 4x.

  • So, their respective frequencies will be 1/1x and 1/4x.

Now, required ratio :

f1 : f2 =  \dfrac{1}{1x}  :  \dfrac{1}{4x}

 \implies f1 : f2 =  \dfrac{1}{1}  :  \dfrac{1}{4}

 \implies f1 : f2 =  4: 1

So, ratio of frequency is 4 : 1 .
