Ratios

Given

The ratio of two numbers is 4:7.

Product of the two numbers is 1008.

To Find

The greatest number among two obtained numbers.

Solving

Let 'x' be a common multiple of the two numbers.

Then, numbers will be 7x and 4x.

It is given that product of these numbers is 1008.

( 7x ) * ( 4x ) = 1008

28x² = 1008

x² = 1008 / 28

x² = 36

x = -6 or 6

Now, we will make cases as we obtain two values of x.

Case 1

Taking value of x = 6.

Numbers will be,

4x = 4 * 6 = 24

7x = 7 * 6 = 42

So, greatest number among these two is 42.

Case 2

Taking value of x = -6.

Numbers will be,

4x = 4 * ( -6 ) = -24

7x = 7 * ( -6 ) = -42

So, greatest number among these two is -24.

Answer

So, the greatest number is 42 if we take x = 6 and

the greatest number is -24 if we take x = -6.

Note

  • If we take square root of a number then it will give two values.
  • In negative integers, numbers with smaller magnitude are greater.
  • For example, -5 is greater than -7.
