The ratio of two numbers is 3 : 5. The difference of the numbers is 12. The sum of the numbers is: shortcut answer

Platonium: Ok , you've asked it you'll get the answer but it is not in shortcut ratio is 3:5 let the no. as 3x and 5x and since difference is 12(it's a positive no.) therefore 5x - 3x = 12 or, 2x = 12 or x = 6 so we get 1st no. = 3 X 6 = 18 and second no. = 5 X 6 = 30
Platonium: so the sum is 30 + 18 = 48

Answer:

1st number = (-18)

2nd number = (-30)

Step-by-step explanation:

Given, the two numbers are in the ratio 3 : 5

So, let the two numbers be 3x and 5x

Given, their difference is 12

According to the question,

3x - 5x = 12

=> -2x = 12

=> -x = \dfrac{12}{2}

=> -x = 6

Variable cannot be negative

∴ x = -6

∴ 1st number => 3x

=> 3 * (-6)

=> (-18)

∴ 2nd number => 5x

=> 5 * (-6)

=> (-30)

SOLUTION:-

LET THE COMMON RATIO BE x

3x,5x

As difference =12,we must subtract

NOW ATQ,

3x - 5x = 12

 - 2x = 12
 - x = 6

AS VARIABLE CAN NEVER HAVE NEGATIVE SIGN

x=-6

Therefore,

3x=3×(-6)= -18

5x=5×(-6)= -30
