Let the numbers be x & y. So as per the question (1)…x:y=5:3 & (2)…x-y=20 . Now from (1) we get x=5y/3 & we substitute the value of x in (2). Then (2) becomes, 5y/3-y=20, or (5y-3y)/3=20, or 2y/3=20, or 2y= 20×3=60, or y= 60÷2=30 . Now again substituting the value of y in (2) we get the value of x as 50. So the numbers are 50 & 30.
