To find : smallest number

Given : The ratio of two numbers is 5:2 and their sum is 84 .

Solution :

  • As per given data we know that ratio of two numbers is 5:2 and their sum is 84 .
  • Let , 5x and 2x be the numbers in ratio .
  • Then as per given condition we write as , 5x + 2x = 84
  • Using transposition method we find the value of x .
  • 5x + 2x = 84

        7x = 84 \\ x = 12

  • Now , largest number = 5x = 5\times 12 = 60

                  smallest number = 2x = 2\times 12 = 24

Hence , smallest number is 24 .
