Let the first number be x and the second number be y.
x/y = 7/5
5x = 7y       (by cross-multiplication method)
x = 7y/5       ----------------------------------------------------------------------- (1)

x-y = 42
7y/5 - y = 42
7y/5 - 5y/5 = 42
7y-5y / 5 = 42
2y = 42* 5
y = 42 * 5 / 2
y = 105

Put y in (1)
x = 7 * 105 / 5
x = 7 * 21
x = 147

So, the 2 numbers are 147 and 105.
