A skeleton equation of water and fluorine is given by
H₂O + F₂ ⇔ HF + HOF
We know, any redox reaction is sum of oxidation reaction and reduction reaction.
Step 1 :- oxidation reaction,
2H₂O + F₂ ⇆ 2HOF + 2H⁺ + 2e⁻ , here you can see that right side two electrons are aprear . It means this half reaction is oxidation reaction . Here Fluorine is oxidized from 0 to +1
Step 2 :- reduction reaction,
2H⁺ + F₂ + 2e⁻ ⇄ 2HF , here you can see two electrons are present in left side of half reaction so, this reaction is reaction is reduction reaction. Here fluorine is reduced from 0 to -1
Now, add both equations ,
2H₂O + F₂ ⇆ 2HOF + 2H⁺ + 2e⁻
2H⁺ + F₂ + 2e⁻ ⇄ 2HF
______________________
2H₂O + 2F₂ ⇒2HF + 2HOF , this is complete redox reaction.
Hence, it is clear that fluorine and water is a redox reaction.
