The reaction between HCl and NaOH in its simplified version is
H+ (aq) + OH– (aq) ---> H2O (l)
Can you assign a plausible explanation as to why the reaction should be exothermic?
Answers
The reaction goes as follows :-
IN THE REACTION :-
1) A neutral salt is formed. The salt is Sodium Chloride (NaCl)
2)One molecule of water is also formed.
3)It is a neutralization reaction.
4Common expression of such reactions is as follows :-
Now,
The reaction mentioned above is an exothermic reaction because
both hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide try to balance each other.
In this process of balancing heat is evolved and this heat is passed on to the molecules present in the reaction and further this heat is given to the surrounding making the heat evolved to the surrounding.
Due to this escape of heat from the reaction we observe this reaction as an exothermic reaction.
But later on this heat reduces and the solution comes back to the original room temperature.
In this reaction exchange of Ions takes place because of the aqueous solution. To balance Each Other they lose energy from themselves and the substances break into ions :-
Hcl breaks down into H+ ion and Cl- ion
NaOH breaks into Na+ ion and OH- ion.
then,
The interchanging occurs.
(H+) + (OH-) - - > H2O
(Na+) + (Cl-) - - > NaCl
Due to this the heat is evolved and this reaction can be said to be as EXOTHERMIC REACTION.
Great!
