The carbylamine reaction is a chemical test for detection of primary amines .
In this reaction , the p-toluidine is heated with alcoholic potassium hydroxide and chloroform .
If a primary amine is present , the isocyanide ( carbylamines ) is formed which are foul-smelling substances .
