The reactor is making 10 ton Epsom Salt (MgSO4, 7H2O) per batch. Reaction takes place between high quality Dolomite (containing equi-molar MgCO3 and CaCO3 with insignificant inerts) with 6N Sulfuric Acid. The acid is commercial grade containing 98% by wt H2SO4. The reactor is equipped with a steam sparger at the bottom for agitation. The reaction involved is
(Mgco3.CaCo3)+2H2SO4 = MgSO4 + CaSO4 +2H20+2C02
At wt.of Mg = 24.3, Ca = 40, S = 32, sp.gr of 98%H2SO4 = 1.83. sp.gr. of Dolomite=2.85.
What is the number of moles of H2SO4 that is reacting with Dolomite ?

Answer:

Atomic mass of one molecule of H2SO4 is 98 Atomic mass unit. Atomic mass of one mole of H2SO4 is 98 grams. So 98 grams of H2SO4 contains 1 mole of H2SO4 molecule i.e., 7 moles atoms. 49 grams of H2SO4 contains 1/2 mole of H2SO4 molecule i.e., 3.5 moles atoms.

Hope Uh Understand!:)
