Gandhi, his principles and the mass non cooperation movement led by him was main reason for British to leave India.
1). Congress was elite club which had no connection to masses. Gandhi lived among masses and connected to them. This helped build mass movement. He took up their causes like untouchability and became accepted as mass leader.
2). Gandhi realised that British empire is stretched in WW2 and was in need of support from British Indian Soldiers. Gandhi was against sending Indian soldiers. So he along with Congress started a civil disobedience movement called quit India movement in 1942. He asked all Indians to leave their govt jobs. Gandhi told the masses to act as an independent nation and not to follow the orders of the British.
This was a fairly successful movement and by the time WW2 ended it was clear to British that they cannot rule India for long.
3). After 2 centuries of loot, Britishers were not getting any significant income from India. This was coupled with frequent mass strikes, mass protests and mass agitations which was started by Gandhi.
4). Final straw was Naval mutiny in which armed forces refused to obey British (non cooperation). It became crystal clear to Britishers that British Indian Armed forces could no longer be universally relied upon for support in crisis. It was more likely itself to be the source of the sparks that would ignite trouble and be the reason for another war which Britishers cannot afford.
Having no choice British left India.
So Indian independence was fought on principles of Gandhi and by masses united by Gandhi.

British decided to leave India, because they were forced to, the circumstances played major role.
The world war-
Azad hind fouz - it destroyed their faith on the indian army rather loosened their hope of complete control over india, as they did with and by no means they could bring the british army here! Neither their downed economy would sustain it nor the army of england could have willed it!
Then quit india movement and chalo delhi etc mass movwments played their roles!
So, to save their face, and to leave keeping their respect ( so they thought) they decided to end their colonial rule over India.
