  • To Find : Refractive index µzx
  • Given : refractive index µxy= 2/3,and the refractive index µyz = 4/3

{\red{\huge{\underline{\mathbb{Theory:-}}}}}

When the light goes from one medium ( other than vacuum or air) to another medium then that refractive index is called relative refractive index.

for example : refractive index of medium 1 with respect to medium 2 , µ12 = µ1/µ2

↪ refractive index of air or vaccum is 1.

{\red{\huge{\underline{\mathbb{Solution:-}}}}}

the refractive index of x with respect to y,

 uxy=  \frac{2}{3}

the refractive index of y with respect to z,

uyz=  \frac{4}{3}

the refractive index of z with respect to x

uzx =  \frac{uz}{ux}

 =  \frac{uz}{uy}  \times  \frac{uy}{ux}

 =  \frac{3}{4}  \times  \frac{3}{2}

 =  \frac{9}{8}

Answer:

9/8

Explanation:

n12 × n23 × n31=1

n(xy) × n(yz) × n(zx) =1

(2/3) × (4/3) × n(zx) =1

n(zx) =9/8
