actually formula is vb/va which is reciprocal of 1/ nab

n^ba= 1/1.7

1.7n^ba=1

1/n^ba = 1.7

n^ba= 1.7/1

n^ba= 1.7

Solution:

The given question can be solved very easily as shown below.

Given that,

The refractive index of medium A with respect to medium B = nᵃᵇ = 1.7

⇒ nᵃᵇ = nᵃ/nᵇ = 1.7

Now the refractive index of medium B with respect to medium A is given by,

⇒ nᵇᵃ = nᵇ/nᵃ = 1/nᵃᵇ

⇒ nᵇᵃ = 1/1.7 = 0.588

Therefore The refractive index of medium B with respect to medium A is 0.588.
