The refractive indices of glass with respect to air and refractive index of water with respect to air are 3/2 and 4/3 respectively. If speed of light in glass is 2 x 108 m/s, find the speed of light in water.

Actually, ng = 3/2 and nw = 4/3.

Absolute Refractive Index of a medium = Speed of light in vacuum/Speed of light in the medium

Speed of light in glass = 2 x 108 m/s

Speed of Light in Vacuum = (3/2) x 2 x 108 m/s = 3 x 108 m/s

Speed of light in water = (3 x 108 m/s)/(4/3)

                                       = 2.25 x 108 m/s

hope it helps you

ng = 3/2
nw = 4/3

We know that,
Refractive index of a medium = Speed of light in vaccuum / Speed of light in the medium

Speed of light in glass = 2×108m/s
Speed of light in vaccuum = (3/2)×2×108m/s
=2.25×108m/s
Speed of light in water = (3×108m/s) / (4/3)
= 2.25×108m/s
