The region between 23.5 degrees North and 23.5 degrees south is known as the tropics. The equator passes at 0 degrees at the center of this region, the equator receives the direct rays of the sun throughout the year and the lengths of the days remain equal to the lengths of nights. Thus, in the tropical region, the direct rays of the sun are received at an angle near 90 degrees. This causes the tropics to remain hot year round with very low annual and diurnal ranges of temperature and directly overhead midday sun for at least two times in a year.
