The region in which combustion of fuels takes place

Is a very thin layer of bright lights ( the colour is dependant of the chemicals). But in a typical stove flame you have a blue for complete combustion, red for incomplete and a bright center where the bulk of chemical reactions happens. The thickness of layers is a function of pressure and temperature. In the case of a explosion , for example, once the ball of fire takes up speed and becomes a shockwave you no longer can see the combustion layer but it’s there in the form of a incredible thin layer propagating faster than the speed of sound at high pressure and temperature.

In an internal combustion engine, combustion takes place in cylinder whereas in gas turbines it takes place in Combustion chamber.
